Patenting and Firm Growth: Evidence from US Manufacturing

چکیده
Patents are one of the important outputs of innovation processes within firms, and have been a topic of extensive research recently, spurred in no little part by the publication of the NBER patent data (Hall, Jaffe and Trajtenberg, 2001) and the availability of patent data online (e.g. the USPTO website). This study uses name-matching procedures to create a new dataset that links the NBER patent data to firm data from the US Census Bureau. Our linked dataset covers more than 48,000 unique assignees, representing almost two-thirds of all non-individual, non-university, non-government assignees from 1975 to 1997. Using these new linked data, we generate a number of new descriptive statistics on the links between patenting and firm growth in the US manufacturing sector. We find that while there are significant cross-sectional differences in size and total factor productivity between patentee firms and non-patentee firms, changes in patent-ownership status within firms is associated with a contemporaneous and sizeable increase in firm size, but little to no change in total factor productivity. This evidence suggests that patenting is associated with firm growth through new product innovations that increase firm scope rather than through productivity-enhancing advances. Consistent with this explanation, we find that the change in patent-ownership status is contemporaneous with an increase in the number of unique seven-digit product classes that a firm produces. These findings are robust to alternative measures of size and productivity, and to various sample selection criteria.

External Factors Affecting Firm Growth: Evidence from Small Scale Manufacturing Firms in Tigray Regional State of Ethiopia
It is widely agreed that small scale enterprises (SSEs) used to play a crucial role in achieving the industrial and economic development. Though SSEs play indispensable economic role, studies are limited to analyze the external factors that affect the growth of SSEs independently. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to examine the effect of external firm factors influencing small scale ma...
متن کاملWhat happens when firms patent? New evidence from US economic census data∗
We build a new concordance between the NBER Patent Data and US Census micro-data, and use it to examine what happens when firms patent. We find strong evidence that increases in patent stock are associated with increases in firm size and scope as well as with changes in factor intensity. We find somewhat weaker evidence that changes in patenting are positively correlated with changes in total f...
متن کاملManufacturing Firm Size Distribution in Iran Evidence from Food & Beverages and Non-Metallic Mineral Products
Empirical studies have shown that the size distribution of firms can be described as a lognormal or Pareto distribution. However, these studies have focused on developed countries and little attention has been devoted to developing countries. Using the variable of number of employees as a measure of firm size, this paper investigates the shape of firm size distribution in the food & beverages i...
متن کامل“Intellectual Property Strategies and the Returns to R&D”
Although the prospect of obtaining patent protection is believed to encourage R&D investments and thus the rate of inventive activity, there is little by way of direct evidence to support this belief. We use original data from the 1994 Carnegie Mellon survey on the appropriation of R&D in the US manufacturing sector to empirically estimate a structural model linking a firm’s choice of the optim...
متن کاملInternational Capital Movements and Relative Wages: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing Industries
In this paper, we use a multi-sector specific factors model with international capital mobility to examine the effects of globalization on the skill premium in U.S. manufacturing industries. This model allows us to identify two channels through which globalization affects relative wages: effects of international capital flows transmitted through changes in interest rates, and effects of international...
